Music Week - Day 2 - The Soul Session

Edited BY G P Kennedy

In our week-long listen to our hearts and heads in lockdown we opened up with Daniel in New York City. Today we feature two songs from Peace, in Lagos, Nigeria. She takes time reflect on family, love. Luther, and longing. From NYC to Lagos, so, meanwhile on the other side of the Atlantic...

Peace – Lagos, Nigeria

“Music gives a soul to the universe, wings to the mind, flight to the imagination and life to everything.” ― Plato

Coronavirus has put a lot of stop to a lot of things, but it did not stop us having the chance to listen to music, that would have probably made the whole experience unbearable. The inability to have normal human interactions was saved by our ability to run away using our imagination.

The Lockdown came with many problems. All travel plans all in the air, the planning for the 2020 edition of the Africa movie Academy awards left with uncertainty will the world be back to normal or not?

To be honest after the first three weeks of watching the TV for updates on what next with Coronavirus the Alien visitor. I decided to stop watching so much news and I spent most of my time listening to music and allowing my imagination to grow wider on the possibilities that come with all the borders closed.

A Million Roses - Edge

As I listened to A Million Roses a song my late brother Michael wrote, I had Edge perform the song, after he died, whilst listening to it I kept thinking what he would do if he was alive and how he would get the whole African leaders to think about a way to make Africa independent from many things based on the border closure, how we need to feed ourselves stop importation of basic needs  ,Made in Africa would be his new mantra , the song for me was probably a motivation for me to do the #MaskUpAfrica campaign and hopefully on Africa day we would be able to raise money to get the most needed people all masked up .

Give Me The Reason - Luther Vandross

The other songs I listened to was my collection of Gospel music and collection of Luther Vandross…oh Luther how can I forget him I remember interviewing him for my magazine CLICKS in London at the Wembley arena in 1987 just before his show, He kissed my cheek, oooohhh my Luther, My Luther, every song, every lyric off by heart, yes I am a big Luther Vandross fan. I refused to wash my face for a while.

The Give Me The Reason tour can never be forgotten. And in this Corona lockdown my relationship with Luther was reestablished as it gave me the reason to look back at the things that happened in my live in the last few years. People, their idiosyncrasies everybody with an entitlement mentality, many have expectations of you all demanding, you to be there for them, but how many people have really been there for you.

How amazing has it been during this period to know the people who really care about you? How many people that you bother about bothered about you? How many people will you follow to the moon and sky above? How many times can you give it one more try? Before you really say goodbye?

For all the people that did not bother to check on me this period, it seems it’s really time to say Goodbye, rather than giving it one try. A lot of people don’t realize how important it was to check on friends and family during this pandemic, people where going through so much a call could have made a difference.

The best things in life are free so make yourself happy don’t depend on anybody for your happiness finding me was my journey during this coronavirus period and of course I had to get into the spirit of freedom with a good dose of Prince may be I am just too demanding of people, to be more human and show compassion.

“ Honey, I know, I know
I know times are changing
It’s time we all reach out
For something new, that means you too”

Purple Rain - Prince

Week 16 - Daily Diaries - Saturday in London is a 20-hour Momma marathon for Sally

Edited BY G P Kennedy   Sally...,and the baby - London, UK  02:05am  Good morning…. the baby, as usual, has woken up for a bottle of milk.  She is still in our room, before Covid 19 hit we found black mold in the nursery and the landlord wouldn’t sort it out. Then we went into full lockdown and for a few months people could not come into your house to do work, so to cut a long story short the baby is still in with us at 15 months old!  She is not the best sleeper and wakes 2-3 times a night, so we haven’t had a full night’s sleep in forever. She wouldn’t settle after the bottle and nappy change so came into bed with us.   06:25am  The baby is awake again which means we all are.  After 6 o’clock is good as she is usually ready to get up for the day between 5am and 5.30am.  We have a small Android tablet, which we will put CBeebies on just so we can get 30 minutes more sleep usually. The baby's room 07:00am  The baby and I are up for break...

An expertly crafted roast dinner to round of Food Week

Edited BY G P Kennedy     Chicken Roast Dinner by Simon   Hey all looks like its food week, which is my favorite subject at the best of times!   Last Sunday in Oz was Fathers Day so we went out for lunch, which meant that I didn’t get to cook. To compensate for this I am cooking Roast Chicken last night, which is one of my favorite meals and one that I have cooked so many times, I do it on autopilot while listening to music and having a few beers. No flash recipe here but here is what we had and I’ll explain how I did it-   Roast Chicken. Pigs in blankets. Roast potatoes and carrots. Cauliflower, parsnip and roast garlic puree. Brussels sprouts, broccoli and green beans. Home made gravy.   First thing is to work out the finish time and count back.   2.2 kg whole chicken so say 2 hours cook time. This was roasted with garlic, rosemary and lemon placed inside. Lay this on a bed of garlic and rosemary and drizzle with lemon juice and olive oil and then se...

Racial Justice and Equality - Part 6 - An Awakening

Edited BY G P Kennedy Sally - London, UK #blacklivesmatter  The death of George Floyd has been a catalyst for the Black Lives Matter movement to be brought for the forefront of the news.  The color of someone’s skin should not matter in 2020 but for many ignorant, racist, prejudiced, ill-informed people, it still does?  Seeing and reading some of the stuff on the news and on social media, it is unbelievable to see that we are still living in a hugely racist world.     I admit that I thought it was getting better as I tend to surround myself with people that are similar to me, people that do not judge others by their color, their appearance, their sexual preference but by what kind of human being you are, but I have realized this is not a realistic view of the world.    I am from a predominantly white family but I have close relatives that are black so I know about racism through them and am disgusted at how cruel some people can be.    S...
